Charles (Charlie) Sartain is a mining engineer with more than 35 years’ experience in the mining industry, initially in engineering roles at Mount Isa Mines then in various mine management and senior executive roles in the gold and base metals industries, based in Australia and internationally over that time.
He worked for MIM Holdings Ltd in engineering and management roles for 20 years and then with Xstrata plc for 10 years until mid 2013, including 9 years as CEO of Xstrata Copper, one of the world’s leading copper mining companies and Xstrata’s largest global business unit.
In recent years Charlie has taken on various governance roles in listed companies and not-for-profit organisations. He is currently a non-executive Director of ASX-listed companies ALS Limited and OZ Minerals Limited, and was until recently a non-executive Director of major gold producer Newmont (NYSE). He is also a Board Director of Wesley Medical Research Limited, and is Chairman of the Sustainable Minerals Institute’s Advisory Board at The University of Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering at the University of Queensland. He was awarded the AusIMM’s most prestigious award, The Institute Medal, in 2016.
