Stephen leads a Growth & Innovation team that applies innovative, leading-edge technical expertise to discover new ore deposits and develop them into assets, including our newest mine, the Amrun bauxite mine in Queensland, Australia, which was opened weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.
His portfolio includes teams dedicated to supporting Rio Tinto’s assets to be safe and effective throughout their lifecycle – from exploration, through studies, construction, operations and ultimately into closure. He is also leading our efforts to digitise operations, including the use of automation, artificial intelligence and data science.
Stephen became group executive of Growth & Innovation in 2016, following more than three decades of service with Rio Tinto. In 2019, his remit was expanded to include Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), recognising the benefits that bringing our HSE and technical experts together in one team can deliver for both safety and operational excellence.
Stephen first joined Rio Tinto as an exploration geophysicist. Since then, he has worked across a wide range of commodities in more than 45 countries. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, a fellow of the Society of Economic Geology, a member of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysics and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
