Dr David Ransom Honoured with IMARC Legend in Mining Award at the 2024 IMARC Gala Dinner

This recognition honours Dr. Ransom’s exceptional expertise, vast contributions to the mining industry, and his lifelong commitment to advancing geological sciences and mining investments in Australia and internationally. 

Speaking about his memories of Dr Ransom, former colleague and friend Brian Philips says, “What a loss to us all. A seriously great bloke, a remarkable geologist, an outstanding investor, a discerning ability to read a person’s character and skills.

“He invested in people whom he could see would make the enterprise work, which also meant that he was satisfied with the ore reserve and the market. He will be remembered and talked about as one of our industry’s giants. We will miss him. Our thoughts are with Dave’s family.”

Dr. Ransom’s distinguished career spanned more than six decades, during which he made invaluable contributions to structural geology. His journey in the field began with an early fascination sparked by reading Ancient Australia, which ignited a lifelong passion for understanding and exploring geological formations.  

Renowned for his exceptional ability to visualise geological structures in three dimensions, Dr. Ransom delivered pioneering work for major companies such as BHP, CRA, and Newmont. His groundbreaking reinterpretation of Mount Newman’s south wall transformed pit design, showcasing his unique insight into complex geological formations.

His work extended across Australia and internationally, including projects such as the Yellowknife Goldfield in Canada, where he challenged conventional interpretations and contributed to significant discoveries that would reshape mining practices.

As a consultant, Dr. Ransom’s structural geology expertise helped reinterpret and refine industry. In his final interview with IMARC in September, Dr Ransom noted: “I figured out after 10 years of work that I wasn't cut out for corporate management and decided to become a consultant. My gift was structural geology and visualising data in 3D, in my head. It was data interpretation and visualisation that was my specialty.”

Dr. Ransom moved into the investment sector when Barry Fairley from Acorn Capital hired him as an analyst, overseeing microcap companies - those with market caps under $500 million. At the time, this space included roughly 600 companies, many of which had no prior analyst coverage.

Although finance was not his primary expertise, Dr. Ransom’s technical experience in structural geology enabled him to excel in this role. He approached his analyses by focusing on the scientific results these companies produced, assisted by his consulting experience on over 100 projects globally.

He quickly developed a reputation for identifying whether ventures were built on solid foundations or less credible claims, all while fostering strong relationships with brokers and analysts across Australia. His perspective on the diverse array of people and projects within the sector contributed to his distinct approach in investment—a blend of technical insight, industry knowledge, and an uncanny ability to assess projects accurately. His portfolio became one of the most closely watched by brokers, investors and industry alike, waiting to see which explorers and miners he invested in.

Industry veteran Owen Hegarty, Executive Chairman of EMR Capital says, “We will definitely miss him, as will the industry. He was a great geologist, a true professional, and a champion for the mining industry, and particularly a champion for the junior explorer because he recognised it was the juniors beating it out day after day, on the ground that were going to make the discovery.”

Jeff Quartermaine, CEO of Perseus Mining Limited, agrees: “In his time with the Perseus Board, Dave's intelligence and knowledge became widely known in our company. He was deeply appreciated, respected by all who had contact with him. But more than that, he was greatly appreciated as a very kind and wise person.”

Dr. Ransom’s career was defined by an unconstrained hands-on approach to geology that continues to shape the field today. Known for his practical experience and connection to the physical nature of exploration, he was notably sceptical about AI’s role in resource discovery, believing that the unique and unpredictable nature of geological formations required the nuanced insight of experienced geologists.

Throughout his career, he contributed extensively, from advising microcap companies to consulting on major mining projects, leaving a profound legacy that has rightly earned him IMARC’s prestigious Legend in Mining Award.
