A secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials (CRMs) is at the core of the European Union’s green and digital transitions and is vital for increased EU security and defence capabilities.
The MoU signed in 2024 between the EU and Australia created a shared framework to build secure, ethical, and sustainable supply chains for critical and strategic minerals. It has been reinforced by a declaration of intent signed by the European Investment Bank in 2025, expanding existing EU–Australia partnership to the entire value chain, from extraction to processing.
The EU-Australia Free Tade Agreement (FTA) will complement and reinforce these activities by ensuring a smoother flow of CRMs between the EU and Australia, with both strands of cooperation working in tandem to achieve more secure and integrated CRM supply chains.
Australian-run projects have been among the first Strategic Projects in Europe selected under the Critical Raw Materials Act to support green and digital transitions, and defence industry and aerospace industries.
